4A State Tournament @ Salina Bicentennial Center

February 24-25, 2012

Austin Hood makes history, wins championship #3!

The 2012 4A State Tournament saw several things go down in the record books of Louisburg High School wrestling. Senior Austin Hood won an unprecedented 3rd state championship, going 40-0 this season and notching win #150 in the state finals. Junior Cullen Hood (120 lbs.) and senior Austin Caskey (145 lbs.) both came up short, but performed marvelously and represented the Wildcats well. LHS came out with a combined record of 5 wins and 4 losses to bring us to a 20th place finish as a team. It was a tight race for the team championship, but Andale prevailed with 99 points, followed by Colby with 96.5 points and Bonner Springs with 92.5 points.

In his final state tournament appearance, Austin Hood delivered a performance that makes a strong argument for him to be the 4A Senior Wrestler of the Year. He opened the tournament with a technical fall over his Clearwater opponent. In the quarterfinals, Austin faced a familiar foe in Smoky Valley’s Alex Wolf, whom he had defeated Wolf 5-2 in the state finals in 2011. This time, it wasn’t even a close match, with Austin winning by fall in the 3rd period. In the semi-finals, Austin once again tech falled his opponent, this one from Rose Hill. In the finals, another familiar opponent stood in the way of his 3rd state championship: Baldwin’s Bryce Shoemaker. This would be the 4th time these two would meet this season, with Austin winning the previous three encounters. Facing a great deal of pressure, Austin stepped up and rose to the occasion. Scoring two takedowns and an escape, while only giving up one escape himself, Austin finished his high school career with a 5-1 decision and a gold medal.

Cullen Hood had what was arguably one of the toughest weight classes in the entire state. He opened with a 2nd period fall against his Circle opponent, but his next match would be a tough one. He would have to beat Dustin Reed, the defending state champion from Colby. It was a tight match for most of the bout, but Reed scored a takedown to go up 2-0. Late in the 3rd period, Cullen looked like he may have scored the tying takedown, but the officials called it out-of-bounds and penalized Reed for fleeing the mat. With the score being 2-1, Cullen was unable to score the winning points as time ran out. On the back side of the bracket, Cullen faced a returning state medalist from Buhler. It went into double-overtime, and Cullen was unable to escape, losing the match 1-0. Four returning state medalists from last year, including Cullen, left Salina empty-handed.

Austin Caskey had a great season, winning 38 matches and qualifying for state, but he saw his dreams of a state medal disappear early in the tournament. In his first match, Caskey faced a Hugoton wrestler who would eventually take 4th at state. Caskey couldn’t defend against his opponent’s attacks and lost by fall in the 2nd period. On the back side of the bracket, He ran into a solid wrestler from St. James Academy. Caskey fought him off as best as he could, but his opponent was just too overpowering and dominated his way to a 10-1 major decision over Caskey.

The Wildcats finished the season with three 4A State Qualifiers. Austin Hood won his 3rd state championship, Cullen Hood went 1-2, and Austin Caskey went 0-2. It has truly been a great season – thank you for all of your support!

Individual Results:

4A Regionals @ Fort Scott

February 17-18, 2012

Wildcats sending 3 to 4A State in Salina!

Although the season came to an early end for many of the Wildcat Wrestlers, the 4A Regional Tournament in Fort Scott was scene to many highlights of the Louisburg program. Three wrestlers qualified for the 4A State Tournament in Salina next week, and several others came close to making it into the top-4. LHS finished in 6th place as a team in the 15-team field; Pittsburg brought home the Regional championship, followed by Prairie View, Chanute, Fort Scott, and Paola.

Leading the pack was senior Austin Hood, our lone regional champion at 126 lbs. Austin kick-started his bid for a 3rd consecutive state title with a pin and two technical falls. In the finals, Austin was leading his Fort Scott opponent 14-1 when he secured the fall. Junior Cullen Hood (120 lbs.) also made the championship finals, where he saw a familiar face in Prairie View’s Kaleb Konitzer. Midway through the second period, Konitzer caught Cullen in a funk move, reversing him and scoring nearfall. In the third period, Cullen fought for a takedown, but couldn’t pull it off, losing by a 7-0 decision. After a dramatic Friday evening, senior Austin Caskey (145 lbs.) had a rough road to a state berth. Caskey dropped a heart-breaker in overtime to a Prairie View opponent and would have to beat the #2 seed to make it to the top-4. In a tight battle, Caskey pulled out a 6-5 victory over his Independence opponent. In the consolation finals, he ran into a hard-hitting opponent from Coffeyville and lost by fall to take 4th.

Several other Wildcats had good opportunities and came close, but ultimately came up short in their goals to qualify for state. Freshman Austin Huber (113 lbs.) earned a revenge win against a Prairie View opponent in the consolation quarterfinals. In his next match, he dropped a close 3-1 decision to a wrestler from Independence. Junior Curtis Lemke (152 lbs.) won two matches before falling in the consolation quarterfinals to a Parsons opponent. Junior Kyle McLellan began the tournament as the #3 seed, but in the championship quarterfinals he suffered a concussion that knocked him out of the tournament. McLellan had a great chance of placing in the top-4. Junior Austen Scott (132 lbs.) gave his Paola opponent fits in the consolation quarterfinals. He nearly earned a defensive pin a couple of times, but lost 6-3. Freshman Shea Cox finished his season bumping up to 160 lbs. to fill in for the team; he drew a tough opponent in the first round, but on the back side, he had a great match against a Fort Scott opponent. Cox scored the first takedown in the match, but got caught in a reversal and was pinned in the second period.

The Wildcats’ season culminates next weekend with the 4A State Tournament at the Salina Bicentennial Center. Wrestling begins Friday at 10:00am. Matches will continue throughout the day on four mats and by the end of the day, the 2012 state finalists will have been determined. Saturday, matches begin at 9:00am and we will see who all earns state medals by the end of the day. This is a historic opportunity for Louisburg Wrestling, as senior Austin Hood will be competing for his third state title. Austin is the school’s first 4-time state medalist and is already the school’s only 2-time state champion. All three qualifiers have had outstanding seasons, regardless, and they could use as much support as possible as they battle for state medals!

Frontier League Tournament

February 10-11, 2012

Wildcats led by Caskey, finish 6th at League!

Every year, the Frontier League is filled with competitive teams with lots of great talent, and this year was no exception. The Wildcats traveled to Paola High School to compete in the Frontier League Tournament last weekend and faired pretty well against tough teams such as Baldwin, Spring Hill, and DeSoto. Baldwin won the league crown outright, going 6-0 in duals. Spring Hill, Ottawa, and DeSoto were tied with records of 4-2; using the tie-breaker criteria, Ottawa finished 2nd, Spring Hill finished 3rd, and DeSoto finished 4th. Host school Paola was 5th, Louisburg was 6th, and Eudora finished in 7th place.

The Wildcats began the day with a rematch against Ottawa. Last time we wrestled, we were short some key starters, and this time our opens put us in too deep a hole to climb out of. The final score against Ottawa was 45-33. Freshman Austin Huber (113 lbs.) won a key rematch against a kid who’d beaten him earlier this season, and junior Curtis Lemke won a decisive match by fall against a solid wrestler at 152 lbs. In the next round, we took on Paola, another rematch from earlier this season. The score was much closer, 30-24, but again our opens worked against us. Junior Cullen Hood (120 lbs.), senior Austin Caskey (145 lbs.), and junior Curtis Lemke (152 lbs.) each won their matches by fall. The last dual of the night was against Spring Hill, dropping that dual by a score of 48-30. Caskey, Lemke, and junior Kyle McLellan (220 lbs.) all scored pins for the Wildcats.

On Saturday, we had three more tough duals, opening against DeSoto. Freshman Zach Knox, filling in at 126 lbs., was losing 14-2 in the third period and scored a takedown that led to a fall to score some solid points for the Wildcats early on. Later in the dual, we had pins coming from Caskey and McLellan, but the final score was 45-21. Three Wildcats were undefeated going into the Baldwin dual: Hood, Caskey, and McLellan, but only Caskey came out with a win. Hood lost in an ultimate tiebreaker to Tucker Clark and McLellan was pinned by Colton Bonner, the #1 ranked wrestler in 4A. The final score was 57-11. In the last dual of the tournament, the Wildcats faced off against Eudora. We matched up very well against the Cardinals, ending the day with a 43-28 dual victory and securing 6th place in the tournament. Junior Austen Scott (132 lbs.) won by fall and sophomore Ben Powers (138 lbs.) won a 9-3 decision, but one of the highlights of the dual was freshman Shea Cox. Cox, a first-year wrestler, bumped up a weight to fill in at 160 lbs. He lost by a major decision, but he fought the entire match and even scored a takedown on his much bigger opponent.

The Frontier League Tournament marks the beginning of the “Championship Series” for the Wildcats. The next step will be the Kansas Class 4A Regional Tournament at Fort Scott. The top-4 placers in each weight will move on to the Kansas Class 4A State Tournament in Salina. This is the time of year for the boys to be peaking, and it’s looking like several of them have a shot at qualifying for state. Wrestling starts at 2:00pm Friday and 11:00am Saturday at Fort Scott, so come on down to support the Wildcats!

Silver Lake Invitational

Caskey and Hood win gold at Silver Lake!

The Wildcats hit the mats Saturday and faced off against some key Kansas Class 4A teams in the Silver Lake Invitational. Four of our wrestlers placed in the top-6 of this 18-team tournament, leading the Wildcats to an overall 9th place finish as a team. St. James Academy captured the team title, followed by Salina South and the Prairie View.

Two seniors captured gold medals this weekend. Austin Hood went 4-0 with 3 falls to take 1st at 126 lbs. In the finals, Hood defeated Baldwin’s Bryce Shoemaker, a 2010 state champion, for the third time this season, by a score of 6-2. Austin Caskey entered the tournament as the #6 seed, but in a key quarterfinals match-up, he upset the #3 seed who had pinned him just a week earlier. In the semi-finals, his Osawatomie opponent had to injury default, putting him in the finals. Oddly enough, Caskey’s finals opponent was also forced to injury default, giving him the gold medal, his first of the season.

Junior Cullen Hood (120 lbs.) had a great showing in his first tournament back after being injured in early January. In the semi-finals, Cullen dropped a 1-0 decision to the eventual champion, but bounced back with a pair of dominating wins to take 3rd. Junior Curtis Lemke is also coming on strong at the end of the season, taking 5th place at 152 lbs. Lemke wrestled a state-ranked opponent from Class 5A to a 7-4 decision, but had a good run through the backside of the bracket. Junior Austen Scott (132 lbs.) had some great matches but came up short this weekend, going 1-2. Also competing for the Wildcats were freshmen Austin Huber (113 lbs.) and Shea Cox (bumping up to fill in at 160 lbs.). Both Huber and Cox went 0-2.

The “Championship Series” begins next week as the Wildcats travel to Paola High School for the Frontier League Tournament. The seven league schools will compete in a dual format, going head-to-head with each school. League champions, both team and individual, will be determined by overall head-to-head record.

Baldwin Invitational Tournament

January 28, 2012

Hood dominant at Baldwin!

This season marks the first time that the Louisburg Wildcats have been invited to the Baldwin Invitational Tournament, a tough match-up of some of the top 4A schools in the area. Prairie View came out on top with the team championship, followed by Holton, Tonganoxie, Oak Park (Missouri), and host Baldwin. LHS finished in 11th place out of 15 teams with one champion and two other placers.

Senior Austin Hood made another statement this weekend by placing 1st at 126 lbs. Hood scored a dominant tech fall in the quarterfinals and then made a quick pin in the semifinals. In the championship finals, he faced a familiar foe in Baldwin’s Bryce Shoemaker. Hood went right to work in the first period, scoring a quick takedown off an ankle pick and then earning a 2-point nearfall before the end of the first period. Shoemaker chose neutral in the second period and Hood gave up a rare takedown to him. In the third period, Hood chose down and Shoemaker gave an early escape, and the rest of the match became a strategic battle for control. In the end, Hood remained dominant and brought home the championship with a 5-2 victory. Junior Kyle McLellan (220 lbs.) also had a good weekend, taking 4th place in his weight class. He lost to a tough kid from Oak Park, Missouri, but rebounded through the back side of the bracket to meet up with Santa Fe Trail’s Edward Fitzgerald in the 3rd place match. Fitzgerald, who has been ranked at the top in Class 4A, was a tough obstacle that McLellan could not get around. Senior Austin Caskey placed 5th at 145 lbs., dropping some tough matches to opponents from Prairie View and Basehor-Linwood. In the consolation finals match for 5th place, however, he won a great 11-9 decision against his Holton opponent.

Junior Austen Scott (132 lbs.), freshman Austin Huber (113 lbs.), and junior Curtis Lemke (152 lbs.) found themselves with tough draws in the first round, as all three lost their first matches. They each set out to finish as high as they could in the tournament, but only Scott made it to the 9th place match. Scott was leading his Santa Fe Trail opponent by 4 points before getting caught and pinned. Huber won a major decision and Lemke earned a fall on the backside of their brackets, but both lost in the next round. Despite being light for his weight, sophomore Ben Powers continues to fill in at 138 lbs. and giving it all he’s got. Powers was 0-2 on the weekend.

As the Wildcat Wrestlers near the end of January, we find ourselves getting closer and closer to the end of the season. There’s only one more regular tournament before we begin our “Championship Series” of League, Regionals, and State. Next weekend, we travel to Silver Lake for their annual invitational tournament.

Individual Results:
113 lbs. – Austin Huber (fr.) 1-2
126 lbs. – Austin Hood (sr.) 3-0, 1 fall, 1 tech fall, 1st place
132 lbs. – Austen Scott (jr.) 1-2, 1 fall
138 lbs. – Ben Powers (so.) 0-2
145 lbs. – Austin Caskey (sr.) 3-2, 1 fall, 5th place
152 lbs. – Curtis Lemke (jr.) 1-2, 1 fall
220 lbs. – Kyle McLellan (jr.) 2-2, 2 falls, 4th place

BVNW Husky Invitational

January 20-21, 2012

Wildcats led by Hood and Caskey at Blue Valley Northwest!

Last Friday and Saturday, six Wildcat Wrestlers took to the mats in one of the toughest tournaments in the state of Kansas, the Blue Valley Northwest Husky Invitational! Louisburg was one of two 4A schools in a field full of 5A and 6A powerhouses. Manhattan took home the team trophy, followed by Lawrence, Newton, Bonner Springs, and Hutchinson.

At 126 lbs., senior Austin Hood again showed his dominance by notching two technical falls and a fall before facing Lawrence’s Hunter Harralson in the finals. This year, Hood had already defeated Harralson, the only wrestler to have beaten Hood last year, winning 9-1 at Eudora, and this time he was looking to better that performance. After a scoreless first period, Hood chose the bottom position and earned an escape and a takedown to take the lead. Harralson chose the down position in the third period, but Austin rode him out, earning nearfall toward the end of the match for a solid 5-0 decision. Senior Austin Caskey (145 lbs.) had an exciting tournament as well, finishing in 5th place. Caskey’s most exciting match came in the consolation quarterfinals where he was down 9-4 with 30 seconds left. With a master’s focus, he lost no time in hitting his go-to move, the headlock, to tie the match and send it into overtime where he quickly scored the winning takedown.

Juniors Kyle McLellan (220 lbs.) and Curtis Lemke (152 lbs.) came close to placing in the top-6 at this tough tournament. McLellan won two matches by fall, but lost to two tough individuals, both of whom are ranked in the top-6 in Class 6A. Lemke had a tough draw in the first round, losing to a state-ranked opponent from Shawnee Mission South, but bouncing back with a solid win against a Washington opponent. In the next round, he came up against a tough match with an opponent from Hutchinson and lost 10-3. Junior Austen Scott (132 lbs.) and sophomore Ben Powers (138 lbs.) also wrestled for the Wildcats. Both Scott and Powers were 0-2 this weekend.

Next week, we’ll be traveling to Baldwin for a new addition to our schedule, but we’ll see many familiar faces at the Baldwin Invitational Tournament. We expect to find lots of tough competition from the likes of Baldwin, Tonganoxie, Holton, Lansing, and Oak Park (Missouri).

Individual Results:
126 lbs. – Austin Hood (sr.) 4-0, 1 fall, 2 tech falls, 1st place

Prairie View Duals

14 January, 2012

Hood, McLellan lead ‘Cats to 9th place finish at Prairie View

If you want to bring home some team victories when you go into a dual tournament, you’ve got to take a full team. Unfortunately, placing high as a team wasn’t possible for the Wildcats at the Prairie View Duals. With a team of only 7 wrestlers, we took some knocks as we wrestled our way to a 9th place finish. We won more individual matches than we lost, however, bringing home an overall 15-10 record with head-to head matches.

The first dual of the day, we lost to Blue Valley Southwest 24-51, but we won 5 out of 7 matches. Against Ottawa, we lost by a team score of 15-61 and only won 3 of 7 matches. Against Andover, the score was 31-45 but we won 6 out of 7 matches. In our last dual in pool competition, we faced Shawnee Mission South and lost 30-60, again winning 5 out of 7 matches. Mathematically, it was highly unlikely that we could win a dual, giving up 42 points right off the bat, but in the 9th place match, we ran into a school with just as many opens as we had: Anderson County. Things worked out just right so that there were 3 weights where we were both open, we received 4 forfeits and they received 4 forfeits. That meant it came down to 3 head-to-head matches to determine the winner of the dual. Junior Austen Scott (132 lbs.) wrestled first, getting pinned in the first period. Then senior Austin Caskey (145 lbs.) and junior Kyle McLellan (220 lbs.) each came out and won by fall in the first period to secure the dual victory for the team!

Individually, two Wildcats were undefeated on the day: senior Austin Hood (126 lbs.) and McLellan. Hood notched 3 wins by fall, while McLellan had 2 pins. Freshman Austin Huber (113 lbs.) was 4-1, beginning the day with an exciting 9-7 overtime win, and Caskey was also 4-1 at 145 lbs., winning two close decisions along the way. Freshman Zach Knox picked up two pins at 120 lbs. Freshman Logan Glenn was 2-3 at 106 lbs. and junior Austen Scott, who earned a fall and a major decision at 132 lbs., was also 2-3.

This tournament essentially marks the half-way point of the season. There are only four more regular-season tournament weekends until the Regional Tournament will be upon us! On Friday, the Wildcats will head up to Blue Valley Northwest for the annual Husky Invitational.

Individual Results:
106 lbs. – Logan Glenn (fr.) 2-3
113 lbs. – Austin Huber (fr.) 4-1
120 lbs. – Zach Knox (fr.) 3-2, 2 falls
126 lbs. – Austin Hood (sr.) 5-0, 3 falls

145 lbs. – Austin Caskey (sr.) 4-1, 2 falls
220 lbs. – Kyle McLellan (jr.) 5-0, 2 falls

Wildcat Classic Wrestling Invitational

7 January, 2012

Hood remains undefeated, wins home tourney

The Wildcat Classic Wrestling Invitational is a tournament that has roots back to the early days of Louisburg wrestling. Coach Don Meek started the program in 1969 and decided to put on a home tournament the very next year. For many decades, this tradition had been carried on, and we’re proud to have continued with it. This year, ten teams gathered in the LHS gym, which was covered with four wrestling mats, to compete for the team and individual titles. Tonganoxie came away with 1st place, followed by Seaman in 2nd and Blue Valley West in 3rd. LHS finished in 8th place with three top-4 finishers.

Senior Austin Hood (126 lbs.) continues to lead the team as he went 4-0 to win our only individual championship. Hood notched pins in his first three matches and then won an excited match in an ultimate tie-breaker against his Lansing opponent. Hood and his opponent were tied 1-1 after three periods, and then after a scoreless overtime and matching each other escape for escape in the tiebreaker periods, it came down to a 30-second ultimate tiebreaker. If the bottom man escaped, he won the match, and if the top man rode him out, then he won. With 5 seconds left, Hood’s opponent nearly escaped, but Austin caught hold of his leg and held on with all he had to finish out the period. Hood remains undefeated at 16-0. Senior Austin Caskey walked away with a 3rd place finish at 145 lbs. Caskey lost a close decision to the eventual champion and then won a tight 6-5 match in the consolation finals to an opponent who was ranked in the top 6 in Class 5A. Freshman Zach Knox stepped up again to fill the shoes of Cullen Hood at 126 lbs. and he came away with a 4th place finish. Knox has a 5-5 record on varsity and has finished in the top-4 at two tournaments.

Freshmen Logan Glenn (106 lbs.) and Austin Huber (113 lbs.) both finished 5th in their weight classes, and juniors Curtis Lemke (152 lbs.) and Kyle McLellan (220 lbs.) both finished in 6th place. Juniors Austen Scott (132 lbs.) and Konnor Cook (285 lbs.) each earned a pin, but did not make it to the top-6. Another pair of juniors, Kyle Edwards at 138 lbs. and Greyson Honsinger at 182 lbs., filled in the varsity line-up for the Wildcats, but were winless on the day.

After a grueling start to the new year, the Wildcats are preparing for a dual tournament this upcoming weekend at Prairie View. We’ll see some familiar regional opponents, such as Prairie View and Anderson County, but we’ll also see some new teams. Let’s go Wildcats!

Individual Results:
106 lbs. – Logan Glenn (fr.) 0-5, 5th place
113 lbs. – Austin Huber (fr.) 1-2, 5th place

McLellan goes 2-0 in duals, leads Wildcats

The LHS Wildcats traveled a little out of state to see a familiar foe and a Missouri foe in a pair of friendly duals, but the overall scores weren’t so friendly. Louisburg, fielding a team with 5 open weight classes, gave up some insurmountable leads in each dual, but there were some highlights to the evening. The final scores were LHS 18, Prairie View 48 and LHS 9, Adrian 54.

Junior Kyle McLellan (220 lbs.) was the lone Wildcat to go 2-0 on the evening. McLellan scored two falls against his opponents. Junior Austen Scott (132 lbs.) won a tough match against his Adrian opponent, scoring the winning points in the last few seconds. Junior Curtis Lemke (152 lbs.) opened his evening with a quick pin against his Prairie View opponent as well. Junior Cullen Hood (126 lbs.) bumped up a weight to fill in for his sick brother and lost a tough match against his Prairie View opponent, falling in double overtime, but he also suffered an elbow injury during his match, which prevented him from competing against Adrian.

LHS was also represented by freshman Logan Glenn (106 lbs.), freshman Austin Huber (113 lbs.), freshman Zach Knox (120 lbs.), junior Greyson Honsinger (182 lbs.), and junior Konnor Cook (285 lbs.). Glenn, Huber, and Cook are regular fixtures in the varsity line-up, but Knox filled in when Cullen Hood bumped up and Honsinger is filling in for John Hamamy.

The Wildcats are ready to turn around and get back to work. This weekend, we host our annual Wildcat Classic Wrestling Invitational. Several top teams from across the state will be coming, including Seaman, Lansing, Shawnee Heights, and Tonganoxie.
